Mojo | The Best Book on Executive Coaching?

When a friend and colleague suggested I read Marshall Goldsmith’s book ‘Mojo’, I have admit I was put off by the title.

I then noticed that the book had a testimonial from Warren Bennis, and that The Times and Forbes had voted Marshall as one of the top 10 business influencers in the world...

I became interested, and on reading found it one of the most useful and practical books on coaching senior executives that I’ve ever read.

Anyone with a good NLP background will be able to apply what he says immediately.

‘Mojo’ is a bit like ‘flow’ in that it’s ‘the moment when we do something that’s purposeful, powerful, and positive and the rest of the world notices.’

To increase your Mojo, Marshall suggests we focus on four building blocks: Identity, Achievement, Reputation and Acceptance. He outlines fourteen tools related to these building blocks which will lead to improving our ‘Mojo’.

The following list explains the quadrants and identifies one tool from each:

Identity
Understanding who you are

Tool # 1: Establish criteria that matter to you

Achievement
Making it easier to get things done

Tool # 5: Rebuild one brick at a time

Reputation
Taking control of your story

Tool # 8: When to stay; when to go

Acceptance
Change what you can; let go of what you can’t

Tool # 12: Influence up as well as down

Highly recommended.

Mojo: How to Get It, How to Keep It, How to Get It Back When You Lose It

Next month I’m reviewing Mind, Set and Match by UK Human Behaviour Expert, Sunil Bali.

You can buy the book from the following link: A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches.

We will shortly be bringing out a DVD companion to our ‘A Useful Guide to Coaches’ ebook. You can see and listen to a short video also about the opening ‘Frame’ here: NLP Coaching Video
Frame.

NLP Definition of the Month: Towards

‘Towards’ refers to a motivational pattern marked by seeking to accomplish or achieve a particular goal.

This is the opposite of someone who is motivated ‘away’ from a particular problem. A practical application of this is in presenting. As some people within an audience are likely to be motivated by ‘towards’ statements and other are motivated by ‘away’ statements, it’s often best to use both. For example:

“We know some of you don’t like the noise in the reading area (away) so we’ve created a separate special place where those of you who want to debate issues can do so (towards).”

You can see more definitions by following this link: NLP Training: Glossary A-Z.

And Finally...

Something very different: my son Liam has entered a two-minute movie competition with his very short movie My Sunrise.

“You don’t know how lucky you are walking around in the daytime”

Just a thought!

My Sunrise

Take care and much success,

Michael, 20th July 2010

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - July 2010

Hi, here’s your July 2010 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents - what’s in your newsletter this month:

• Kaplan’s Guide to Passing Exams
• Beale’s Podcast
• The Benefits of 1:1 NLP Training
• July NLP Taster and Future Dates
• The NLP Leadership - Conference Contributors Wanted
• A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches Extract 4
• NLP Definition of the Month - TOTE
• And Finally…

Kaplan’s Guide to Passing Exams

I’m always pleased when previous delegates get back in touch to let me know what they’re doing. And it’s a special pleasure when they’ve done something really good. Stuart Pedley-Smith has just published The E Word: Kaplan’s Guide to Passing Exams, which is, as the title suggests, about passing exams successfully.

Stuart’s job is a senior lecturer at Kaplan Financial. His pay is directly related to the success of his students in passing exams. He knows his stuff. While it’s essential reading both for anyone who needs to pass an exam and anyone coaching others to pass, his book is also about learning and success – and you’ll find the same approaches are useful in many aspects of life.

The contents, which are presented in an easy to speed read format include:

• How examinations work
• What’s stopping you from passing
• Motivation and attitude
• Learning
• Learning smarter
• Memory
• Techniques to improve exam performance

He suggests that the best strategy for most exams is to start with a simple backward time plan:

• End Result - Pass the exam
• How - Pass the exam questions
• How - Practice key questions in the examinable topic areas in exam conditions
• How - Identify the important examinable topic areas
• How - Analyse past questions, read examiners’ guidelines, ask experts

To me, the bottom line is that someone with a great exam strategy and a great mental attitude, together with some proven memory techniques, will not only get much better results for a given amount of work, but they’ll learn more as the approaches tie into how we naturally learn.

I suggest the approach applies to many aspects of life!

And whether we like it or not, exams can be a fast track to great jobs and great learning opportunities.

While on the topic on education and learning, I also recommend Ken Robinson’s TED talk on ‘bring on the educational revolution.’ Ken’s approach is that current education is based on the factory or industrial way of life, which now only applies to a minority of jobs – and it doesn’t prepare the next generation for many of the challenges that they will face.

Thought provoking...

Beale’s Podcast

We are having a break from new podcasts this month, but you can access each of the 64 previous ones from our free NLP Podcast feed. We have some excellent guests lined up for the future, so keep coming back to visit!

The Benefits of 1:1 NLP training

When I started NLP training I assumed that large NLP trainings were best, and it was with a certain trepidation that six years I agreed to run a 1:1 training with a client from the Middle East who couldn’t make our open training dates. I was genuinely delighted and surprised how much we both enjoyed it and the value he claimed to get from it.

Since then I’ve always run three or four 1:1s a year and so far they’ve always been really good, particularly for senior people who may not want to share their direction and vision with people they don’t know yet. The feedback I get is that they’re considered a luxury.

In addition there is no way you cannot take part! Thus, you are guaranteed to move forward on what you want to explore.

There are benefits from all training formats, but if you want to explore something that’s really important to you consider our 1:1 NLP training.

July NLP Taster (Worth £120) and Future Dates

We have our next NLP taster evening on 20th July 2010 in Milton Keynes. They’re free and fun. Find out more by clicking this link: NLP Taster Evenings. You can register for your place at Seminar registrations.

The NLP Leadership Conference - Contributors wanted

I’ve teamed up with US colleague Ryan Nagy and we’re developing our own NLP Leadership Conference for launch late summer. Contributors receive a 50% of any sales through their affiliate code. I think it’s a great model for purchasers and contributors as well.

If you have any genuinely useful NLP or NLP related material that could be included, and you would like to be a contributor, please call me. You can see a very draft mock up of the home page from: NLP Leadership Conference.

You can find draft notes to contributors on the following Google Document: The NLP Leadership Conference 2010 Invitation to Contribute

A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches - Extract 4

You can read the fourth extract from our eBook here: A useful Guide to NLP for coaches Extract 4.

This discusses the framework I use with my NLP training and coaching. I describe it as ‘the dials and levers to effect learning and change’, and give some suggestions as to the sequence to use them.

Feel free to comment if you’re a member of our forum. And it’s free to join if you’re not!

You can buy the book from the following link: A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches.

We will shortly be bringing out a DVD companion to our ‘A Useful Guide to Coaches’ ebook. You can see and listen to a short new extract here: NLP Coaching Video.

NLP Definition of the Month: TOTE

Developed by Miller, Galanter and Pibram, the acronym TOTE stands for the sequence Test-Operate-Test-Exit, which describes the basic feedback loop used to guide all behaviour.

I’ve found that establishing specifically what people do now to achieve the results they currently get is an almost foolproof way of helping them identify how they can improve. I use a mixture of TOTE and Meta model questions.

You can see more definitions by following this link: NLP Training: Glossary A-Z.

And Finally...

Think about which of these two options will bring the very best results for you tomorrow.

• Having razor-like and passionate focus on what you want to achieve, taking only those actions that will move you towards your goal;

• Relaxing, softening and accepting that whatever happens will be exactly what’s needed for you to achieve what’s really important to you

And if these don’t work, what will bring you the very best results tomorrow?

Take care and much success,

Michael, 20th June 2010

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - June 2010

Hi, here’s your June 2010 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

  • Beale’s Podcast

  • Therapy and Coaching Cyber Conference
  • The NLP Leadership Conference | Contributors wanted
  • A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches | Extract 3
  • NLP Definition of the Month | Time Distortion
  • And Finally…

The Politics of Happiness

This book has got me thinking more than any book I’ve read recently! I strongly recommend you get Derek Bok’s book, ‘The Politics of Happiness’ on your reading list.

Derek, a former Harvard President, attempts to make sense of the thousands of studies that have been carried out on the subject of happiness. He then looks at how governments might take into account the findings, the implications of which are fascinating.

While any summary is going to be a huge generalisation, these are some of the findings.

Factors which are related to happiness:

  • Higher income
  • Being married
  • Good social relationships
  • Employment and trusting the company you work for
  • Perceived health, which is not related to ‘measured’ heath such as blood pressure and cholesterol measurements
  • Religious beliefs and life purpose
  • Quality of Government, particularly personal and economic freedom
Several researchers have concluded that human relationships and connections of all kinds contribute to happiness more than anything else.

The book does not answer the question, which comes first?

  • Do people have good social relationships because they are happy?
  • Or are they happy because they have good social relationships?
  • Or, if it’s a mix, which is more important?
It’s interesting than NLP training can not only help individuals access states like happiness directly, but can also help with the direction, attitude and skills to address what are the underlying causes of success, happiness and fulfilment.

The NLP Leadership Conference | Contributors wanted

We will shortly be bringing out a DVD companion to our ‘A Useful Guide to Coaches’ ebook. You can see and listen to a short extract here: NLP Coaching Video | Coaching Framework.

NLP Definition of the Month: Time Distortion

Time distortion is the subjective temporal experience that differs from 'objective' clock time.

We can subjectively slow or speed time up. For example, after driving at high speed on a motorway for several hours and then turning off and having to drive slowly on a town road, time often appears to go very slowly.

You can see more definitions by following this link: NLP Training: Glossary A-Z.

And Finally...

One of my paradoxes for success is big vision, strong direction and yet small, enjoyable steps. Once you’ve created a momentum, it is easy to speed up.

The transcript links to Ania’s personal blog, so you can follow her exploits yourself, and she’s still looking for donations to support the climb.

Brainwashed

I’m becoming increasingly impressed with Seth Godin’s approach to marketing for entrepreneurs and those at the more innovative end of corporate organisations. In the article ‘Brainwashed’, he suggests seven ways to reinvent yourself - they are useful ideas if you’re involved in any form of sales and marketing.

The ideas are:

  • Connect
  • Be Generous
  • Make Art
  • Acknowledge the Lizard
  • Ship
  • Fail
  • Learn
You can download the article here: Brainwashed PDF.

New Website, New Forum, New Training Guide

Over the past two months I’ve developed a new look, new content and faster response to our NLP Training website, our NLP Forum, and our NLP Training Guide.

We have built up a significant resource of podcasts and transcripts over the past three years. Whether your interests are NLP, NLP benefits, Facilitation, Leadership, Metaphor, Motivation, Hypnosis, Sales or Seduction we’ll have something for you.

Have a look at our index of contents here: Podcast Index. There may be materials that are new to you, or ones you had forgotten about – peruse, use and enjoy!

Our new 2010 NLP training guide has now been released both as an NLP PDF and as an online NLP training guide. This is an extremely useful resource for anyone thinking of taking any NLP training.

NLP Practitioner in May

We are running these courses:

  • Practitioner Accreditation ~ 29th September-1st October 2010.
This is an ideal way to start your practitioner training – and, if you wanted to complete your accreditation in a week, we could run an accreditation session on the 29th and 30th May. Let us know.

Please be aware the introductory evening is now fully booked.

A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches | Extract 2

You can read the second extract from our eBook here: A Useful Guide to NLP for coaches Extract 2 which includes:

  • What is NLP?
  • What does NLP add to coaching?
  • What makes a good NLP coach
Feel free to comment if you’re a member of our forum.

And it’s free to join if you’re not!

You can buy the book from the following link: A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches.

NLP Definition of the Month: Timeline

‘Timeline’ is a subjective construct which metaphorically organises your client’s past, present and future time spatially.

Remember, if you want transformational rather than incremental change, it’s better to start with what it’s like to have achieved what you want first – that is, before you consider your current situation. When you’ve imagined what you want, work backwards to identify the steps needed to achieve it.

You can see more definitions by following this link: NLP Training: Glossary A-Z.

And Finally...

If you do one new think every day you’re creating a framework for your success. And if stop doing one thing that doesn’t genuinely contribute to where you want to go you will be doubly successful. Enjoy.

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - April 2010

Hi, here’s your April 2010 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI … bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents: what’s in your newsletter this month:

  1. Beale’s Podcast
  2. ‘Thrive’ and the ‘Million Dollar Consulting Tool Kit?’
  3. More for 2010 – Last Opportunity for Richard in Amsterdam
  4. Possibly the best Investment for Your Development?
  5. A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches
  6. NLP Definition of the Month: Translating
  7. And Finally…
Beale’s Podcast

This month podcast is with Judith Germain and is about how she networks. She talks in particular about her ‘inner network’. Judith runs Dynamic Transitions and is one of the best networkers I know!

I think it’s worth everyone spending a few moments thinking about their ‘inner network’, as it’s one of the key foundations of success. Who do you choose to spend time with? Who do you learn from? Who do you advocate and who advocates you? How would you like to develop your network?

Jude’s key criterion for accepting people into her inner network is that she has to ‘like’ them and respect their ‘integrity’. It helps if they are easy to advocate for, and they share learning together.

You can listen to the podcast from Judith’s ‘Inner Networking’ Podcast and read the transcript from:  Judith’s ‘Inner Networking transcript:

‘Thrive’ and the ‘Million Dollar Consulting Tool Kit’?

I’m a bit of fan of Alan Weiss in the context of Business Consulting. His new book ‘Thrive’ (which can only be bought from his website) is his synthesis of what has worked for him in being a mentor or coach as part of his consultancy practice for the past 30 years.

Curiously, and this relates to the concept of an ‘Inner Network’ above, one of the most important is the value of taking feedback from a small number of people who support you and understand your goals. He is mischievously critical of individuals who give ‘unasked for’ feedback.

He claims it’s mostly about ‘their own’ issues, and that it can be counter-productive to listen to them. However, ‘tough’ feedback from people you trust and respect is worth asking for.

The other book of Alan’s I read last month is ‘the Million Dollar Consulting Toolkit’, which is a series of templates and lists relating to consulting. While I only found 10% directly useful, that 10% was really useful, an example being ten sets of ten sales questions to:
  • Qualify the Prospect
  • Find the Economic Buyer
  • Rebutting Objections
  • Establishing Objectives
  • Establishing Metrics
  • Assessing Value
  • Determining the Budget Range
  • Preventing Unseen Obstacles
  • Increasing the Size of the Sale
  • Going for the Close
And maybe the most important question is, ‘Do you believe it?’ And the question I’d add is, ‘Do you really want it?’

More for 2010: Last Opportunity for Amsterdam

The evening session on Tuesday 18th is now sold out as a stand alone seminar. However, for a very limited time, you can attend as part of registering for the main event on the 19th-21st May. We do expect these to be sold out shortly, so get in and claim your place now!

  • We’re working with NLP Business Trainer Paul Jarvis on a series of ‘NLP in Business’ diploma courses in Madrid and Geneva throughout the year (they’re a real must!)
  • And a reminder for our own 3-Day Hypnosis Influence Master Class on 7-9th April in Milton Keynes (again a real must)
You can register for these events and our Practitioner, Coaching Practitioner, Master and Business Master Practitioner modules from: NLP dates and registration. If you have any questions call me, Michael, on: +44 (0) 1908 506563.

Possibly the best Investment for Your Development

While I appreciate meditation isn’t for everyone I highly recommend this 4 CD set ‘Guided Mindfulness Meditation’ series by Jon Kabat-Zinn. At just over £14 this is one of the best value offers for your personal development. Meditation is a way of building up useful resource states as well as an acceptance of where you are now. Read more at Mindfulness Mediation.

A useful Guide to NLP for Coaches

I’m delighted that Pansophix have now published my eBook, ‘A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches’ which summarises what I’ve found that works in coaching and mentoring over the past ten years.

Over the next few months I’ll be publishing a number of extracts. Click on Introduction to a Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches, for the first extract. In it, I give a summary of what the key issues that I’ve found that people in companies and organisations have, which are to:
  • Develop and add value to their managers and their managers’ peers
  • Develop and add value to their key stakeholders
  • Develop career options and revenue streams which are ‘non competitive’ to their current employer
  • Improve performance on their current job
You can buy the book from the following link: A Useful Guide to NLP for Coaches

NLP Definition of the Month: Translating

‘Translating’ means connecting the meaning of one representation to the same meaning in another representational system.

Imagine you can see yourself achieving an exciting goal, what does that mean to you? How would you represent that meaning as an image? How would that image translate to a sound or feeling?

Imagine that you can feel yourself achieving an exciting goal, what does that mean to you? How would you represent that meaning as a feeling? How would that feeling translate to an image or sound?

Repeat the exercise with hearing yourself achieve an exciting goal.

You can see more definitions by following this link: NLP Training: Glossary A-Z

And Finally

As always, thank you for reading this. Spend a few moments thinking about which emotional and physical states will be most useful to you next month, and later on find yourself, without any effort, accessing them as they’re useful to you.

Remember it’s really your unique experiences that contribute to the wisdom of the world.

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - March 2010

  • And Finally…
Beale’s Podcast

This month podcast is with Trevor Wilkins on Sales and Influence. Trevor runs Holis Associates and is one of the best sales and influence trainers I know.

He believes that really top sales people have two key sets of behaviours: the first is about personal behaviours, the second about working to a tight sales system or process.

Personal Behaviours include fearlessness, determination and integrity.

Process Behaviours are about have a defined process around every stage of the sales process, and about never wasting time – that is, if you’re not going to get a result, move on.

You can listen to the podcast from: Trevor Wilkins on Sales and Influence, and read the transcript from: Trevor Wilkins Sales and Influence Transcript.

Linchpin – Are You Indispensable?

‘Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?’ is Seth Godin’s latest publication and my favourite of his books so far.

The premise is that with the continual outsourcing of traditional ‘white collar’ jobs and tasks (which has a lot further to go), one of the ‘success factors’ for a career is becoming a ‘linchpin’ where you invent, lead, connect others, and continue to create order out of chaos.

Here is a list that leads to being indispensable:

  • Providing a unique interface between members of your organisation
  • Delivering unique creativity
  • Managing complex situations
  • Leading customers
  • Inspiring staff
  • Providing deep subject knowledge
  • Possessing a unique talent
I find Seth a great ‘ideas’ person: he won’t give you a process or a route to get there – but he will create a vision and maybe wake us up to the fact that what we’re doing now may not lead to the success we want.

I suggest the fearlessness, determination and integrity mentioned by Trevor (above) in the context of selling apply equally to being a Linchpin.

We’re recently added details of our business development coaching offer to the ExecCoach.net site. Whether you’re currently looking for a business development coach or not, if you’re interested in business development, you may find our business development checklist useful.

Again I’d be very interested in talking to anyone who is looking for coaching services (or who buys coaching services) who would be prepared to input to our future strategy. And of course I’d be delighted to talk to anyone who is looking for an executive or business coach now!

Definition of the Month: Transderivational Search

Transderivational search means the act of locating through meaning(s) which may not be explicit in a surface structure.

For example, when anyone says something to us, we have to unconsciously search for all the possible meanings to understand it. Some of these secondary meanings may have a strong impact on us although we’re consciously unaware of them.

You can see more definitions by following this link: NLP Training: Glossary A-Z

And Finally

As always, thank you for reading this. Spend a few moments thinking about which emotional and physical states will be most useful to you next month, and later on find yourself, without any effort, accessing them as they’re useful to you.

Remember it’s your unique experiences that contribute to the wisdom of the world.

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - February 2010

Hi, here’s your February 2010 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents: what’s in your newsletter this month:

  • Beale’s Podcast
  • What Every Body is Saying
  • More for 2010
  • NLP Video: NLP Resources
  • Coaching Network Update
  • NLP Definition of the Month: Trance Phenomena
  • And Finally…

Beale’s Podcast

This month I’m revisiting one of our most popular podcasts on the subject of motivation: John La Valle on Motivation. John explains that to do something you need:

  • The capability to do it
  • The belief that you can do it
  • A genuine want to do it – it needs to aligned to your values in some way
  • To take action
All these are worth exploring when you’re working with someone on motivation.

Next month I’ll have two new, excellent podcasts: Trevor Wilkins on Sales, and Judith Germain on building and developing her ‘Inner Network’. Both are well worth waiting for, so keep an eye out for them next month.

What Every Body is Saying

What Every Body is Saying is my favourite book on Body Language; it’s by Ex-FBI Agent Joe Navarro. I like it because I believe, unlike with many body language books, that what Joe says is both true and extremely useful for any coach, consultant or NLP practitioner.

The basis of the book is that it is remarkably difficult to tell whether someone is being truthful or deceitful; however, with practice, it’s easy to notice signs of comfort and discomfort – which can be exceptionally useful if you want to understand them better.

To give you an idea of the content, I’m listing his top ten commandments for decoding non-verbal communication successfully:

1) Be a competent observer of your environment

2) Observing in context is a key to understanding nonverbal behaviour

3) Learn to recognise and detect nonverbal behaviours that are universal

4) Learn to recognise and decode idiosyncratic behaviours

5) When you interact with others, try to establish a baseline

6) Always try to watch for multiple tells – behaviours that occur in clusters or in succession

7) It’s important to look for changes in a person’s behaviour that can signal changes in thoughts, emotions, interest or intent

8) Learning to detect false or misleading non verbal signals is also critical

9) Knowing how to distinguish between comfort and discomfort will help you focus on the most important behaviours for decoding nonverbal communication

10) When observing others, be subtle about it

A good NLP training will help you in much of the above - recommended!

More for 2010

Do take advantage of what we’re offering!

As our February/March Practitioner course is now full, I’m planning to add another practitioner course in the spring. Please call if you’re interested and would like to influence the dates.

In addition to our programme we are:

Strongly supporting Richard’s seminar, ‘The Best of Richard Bandler’ in Amsterdam in May 2010

Working with NLP Business Trainer Paul Jarvis on a series of ‘NLP in Business’ diploma courses in Madrid and Geneva throughout the year (they’re a real must!).

You can see our current schedule on: NLP dates and registration.

NLP Video: NLP in Business

To find out more about NLP applications in Business, watch and listen to a short video where I explain to Liam Beale some of the business applications of NLP. Just click on this video link: Business Applications of NLP.

We’ve had well over 20,000 views to the videos in this series since we launched it as a test eleven months ago. I do recommend video as an additional marketing medium if you want your own messages to have wider distribution.

Coaching Network Update

We’re currently having a break from taking on new coaches for our executive coaching network as we’re consolidating for a couple of months and I’m spending some time planning our future direction.

I’d be very interested in talking to anyone who is looking for coaching services or buys coaching services who would be prepared to input to our future strategy. And of course I’d be delighted to talk to anyone who is looking for an executive or business coach now!

Definition of the Month: Trance Phenomena

Trance Phenomena are behaviours usually associated with deep hypnosis, such as amnesia, arm levitation, hallucination, pain control, etc

What I find interesting is our ability to do these behaviours in everyday life, sometimes without realising it.

NLP Training: Glossary A-Z

And Finally...

Remember my quick test of whether someone is going to achieve something (or not): see whether they can easily and comfortably imagine themselves doing the behaviour of the first, smallest step that will get themselves there.

As always, thank you for reading this. Remember it’s your unique experiences that contribute to the wisdom of the world.
