Mojo | The Best Book on Executive Coaching?

When a friend and colleague suggested I read Marshall Goldsmith’s book ‘Mojo’, I have admit I was put off by the title.

I then noticed that the book had a testimonial from Warren Bennis, and that The Times and Forbes had voted Marshall as one of the top 10 business influencers in the world...

I became interested, and on reading found it one of the most useful and practical books on coaching senior executives that I’ve ever read.

Anyone with a good NLP background will be able to apply what he says immediately.

‘Mojo’ is a bit like ‘flow’ in that it’s ‘the moment when we do something that’s purposeful, powerful, and positive and the rest of the world notices.’

To increase your Mojo, Marshall suggests we focus on four building blocks: Identity, Achievement, Reputation and Acceptance. He outlines fourteen tools related to these building blocks which will lead to improving our ‘Mojo’.

The following list explains the quadrants and identifies one tool from each:

Identity
Understanding who you are

Tool # 1: Establish criteria that matter to you

Achievement
Making it easier to get things done

Tool # 5: Rebuild one brick at a time

Reputation
Taking control of your story

Tool # 8: When to stay; when to go

Acceptance
Change what you can; let go of what you can’t

Tool # 12: Influence up as well as down

NLP Definition of the Month: Towards

‘Towards’ refers to a motivational pattern marked by seeking to accomplish or achieve a particular goal.

This is the opposite of someone who is motivated ‘away’ from a particular problem. A practical application of this is in presenting. As some people within an audience are likely to be motivated by ‘towards’ statements and other are motivated by ‘away’ statements, it’s often best to use both. For example:

“We know some of you don’t like the noise in the reading area (away) so we’ve created a separate special place where those of you who want to debate issues can do so (towards).”

Kaplan’s Guide to Passing Exams

I’m always pleased when previous delegates get back in touch to let me know what they’re doing. And it’s a special pleasure when they’ve done something really good. Stuart Pedley-Smith has just published The E Word: Kaplan’s Guide to Passing Exams, which is, as the title suggests, about passing exams successfully.

Stuart’s job is a senior lecturer at Kaplan Financial. His pay is directly related to the success of his students in passing exams. He knows his stuff. While it’s essential reading both for anyone who needs to pass an exam and anyone coaching others to pass, his book is also about learning and success – and you’ll find the same approaches are useful in many aspects of life.

The contents, which are presented in an easy to speed read format include:

• How examinations work
• What’s stopping you from passing
• Motivation and attitude
• Learning
• Learning smarter
• Memory
• Techniques to improve exam performance

He suggests that the best strategy for most exams is to start with a simple backward time plan:

• End Result - Pass the exam
• How - Pass the exam questions
• How - Practice key questions in the examinable topic areas in exam conditions
• How - Identify the important examinable topic areas
• How - Analyse past questions, read examiners’ guidelines, ask experts

To me, the bottom line is that someone with a great exam strategy and a great mental attitude, together with some proven memory techniques, will not only get much better results for a given amount of work, but they’ll learn more as the approaches tie into how we naturally learn.

I suggest the approach applies to many aspects of life!

And whether we like it or not, exams can be a fast track to great jobs and great learning opportunities.

While on the topic on education and learning, I also recommend Ken Robinson’s TED talk on ‘bring on the educational revolution.’ Ken’s approach is that current education is based on the factory or industrial way of life, which now only applies to a minority of jobs – and it doesn’t prepare the next generation for many of the challenges that they will face.

The Benefits of 1:1 NLP training

When I started NLP training I assumed that large NLP trainings were best, and it was with a certain trepidation that six years I agreed to run a 1:1 training with a client from the Middle East who couldn’t make our open training dates. I was genuinely delighted and surprised how much we both enjoyed it and the value he claimed to get from it.

Since then I’ve always run three or four 1:1s a year and so far they’ve always been really good, particularly for senior people who may not want to share their direction and vision with people they don’t know yet. The feedback I get is that they’re considered a luxury.

In addition there is no way you cannot take part! Thus, you are guaranteed to move forward on what you want to explore.

There are benefits from all training formats, but if you want to explore something that’s really important to you consider our 1:1 NLP training.

NLP Definition of the Month: TOTE

Developed by Miller, Galanter and Pibram, the acronym TOTE stands for the sequence Test-Operate-Test-Exit, which describes the basic feedback loop used to guide all behaviour.

I’ve found that establishing specifically what people do now to achieve the results they currently get is an almost foolproof way of helping them identify how they can improve. I use a mixture of TOTE and Meta model questions.

The Politics of Happiness

This book has got me thinking more than any book I’ve read recently! I strongly recommend you get Derek Bok’s book, ‘The Politics of Happiness’ on your reading list.

Derek, a former Harvard President, attempts to make sense of the thousands of studies that have been carried out on the subject of happiness. He then looks at how governments might take into account the findings, the implications of which are fascinating.

While any summary is going to be a huge generalisation, these are some of the findings.

Factors which are related to happiness:

Higher income
Being married
Good social relationships
Employment and trusting the company you work for
Perceived health, which is not related to ‘measured’ heath such as blood pressure and cholesterol measurements
Religious beliefs and life purpose
Quality of Government, particularly personal and economic freedom

Several researchers have concluded that human relationships and connections of all kinds contribute to happiness more than anything else.

The book does not answer the question, which comes first?

Do people have good social relationships because they are happy?
Or are they happy because they have good social relationships?
Or, if it’s a mix, which is more important?

It’s interesting than NLP training can not only help individuals access states like happiness directly, but can also help with the direction, attitude and skills to address what are the underlying causes of success, happiness and fulfilment.

NLP Definition of the Month: Time Distortion

Time distortion is the subjective temporal experience that differs from 'objective' clock time.

We can subjectively slow or speed time up. For example, after driving at high speed on a motorway for several hours and then turning off and having to drive slowly on a town road, time often appears to go very slowly.

NLP Definition of the Month: Timeline

‘Timeline’ is a subjective construct which metaphorically organises your client’s past, present and future time spatially.

Remember, if you want transformational rather than incremental change, it’s better to start with what it’s like to have achieved what you want first – that is, before you consider your current situation. When you’ve imagined what you want, work backwards to identify the steps needed to achieve it.

Beale’s Podcast

This month podcast is with Judith Germain and is about how she networks. She talks in particular about her ‘inner network’. Judith runs Dynamic Transitions and is one of the best networkers I know!

I think it’s worth everyone spending a few moments thinking about their ‘inner network’, as it’s one of the key foundations of success. Who do you choose to spend time with? Who do you learn from? Who do you advocate and who advocates you? How would you like to develop your network?

Jude’s key criterion for accepting people into her inner network is that she has to ‘like’ them and respect their ‘integrity’. It helps if they are easy to advocate for, and they share learning together.

‘Thrive’ and the ‘Million Dollar Consulting Tool Kit’?

I’m a bit of fan of Alan Weiss in the context of Business Consulting. His new book ‘Thrive’ (which can only be bought from his website) is his synthesis of what has worked for him in being a mentor or coach as part of his consultancy practice for the past 30 years.

Curiously, and this relates to the concept of an ‘Inner Network’ above, one of the most important is the value of taking feedback from a small number of people who support you and understand your goals. He is mischievously critical of individuals who give ‘unasked for’ feedback.

He claims it’s mostly about ‘their own’ issues, and that it can be counter-productive to listen to them. However, ‘tough’ feedback from people you trust and respect is worth asking for.

The other book of Alan’s I read last month is ‘the Million Dollar Consulting Toolkit’, which is a series of templates and lists relating to consulting. While I only found 10% directly useful, that 10% was really useful, an example being ten sets of ten sales questions to:

Qualify the Prospect
Find the Economic Buyer
Rebutting Objections
Establishing Objectives
Establishing Metrics
Assessing Value
Determining the Budget Range
Preventing Unseen Obstacles
Increasing the Size of the Sale
Going for the Close

And maybe the most important question is, ‘Do you believe it?’ And the question I’d add is, ‘Do you really want it?’

A useful Guide to NLP for Coaches

NLP Definition of the Month: Translating

‘Translating’ means connecting the meaning of one representation to the same meaning in another representational system.

Imagine you can see yourself achieving an exciting goal, what does that mean to you? How would you represent that meaning as an image? How would that image translate to a sound or feeling?

Imagine that you can feel yourself achieving an exciting goal, what does that mean to you? How would you represent that meaning as a feeling? How would that feeling translate to an image or sound?

Repeat the exercise with hearing yourself achieve an exciting goal.

Beale’s Podcast

This month podcast is with Trevor Wilkins on Sales and Influence. Trevor runs Holis Associates and is one of the best sales and influence trainers I know.

He believes that really top sales people have two key sets of behaviours: the first is about personal behaviours, the second about working to a tight sales system or process.

Personal Behaviours include fearlessness, determination and integrity.

Process Behaviours are about have a defined process around every stage of the sales process, and about never wasting time – that is, if you’re not going to get a result, move on.

Linchpin – Are You Indispensable?

‘Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?’ is Seth Godin’s latest publication and my favourite of his books so far.

The premise is that with the continual outsourcing of traditional ‘white collar’ jobs and tasks (which has a lot further to go), one of the ‘success factors’ for a career is becoming a ‘linchpin’ where you invent, lead, connect others, and continue to create order out of chaos.

Here is a list that leads to being indispensable:

Providing a unique interface between members of your organisation
Delivering unique creativity
Managing complex situations
Leading customers
Inspiring staff
Providing deep subject knowledge
Possessing a unique talent

I find Seth a great ‘ideas’ person: he won’t give you a process or a route to get there – but he will create a vision and maybe wake us up to the fact that what we’re doing now may not lead to the success we want.

I suggest the fearlessness, determination and integrity mentioned by Trevor (above) in the context of selling apply equally to being a Linchpin.

Definition of the Month: Transderivational Search

Transderivational search means the act of locating through meaning(s) which may not be explicit in a surface structure.

For example, when anyone says something to us, we have to unconsciously search for all the possible meanings to understand it. Some of these secondary meanings may have a strong impact on us although we’re consciously unaware of them.

Beale’s Podcast

This month I’m revisiting one of our most popular podcasts on the subject of motivation: John La Valle on Motivation. John explains that to do something you need:

The capability to do it
The belief that you can do it
A genuine want to do it – it needs to aligned to your values in some way
To take action

All these are worth exploring when you’re working with someone on motivation.

Next month I’ll have two new, excellent podcasts: Trevor Wilkins on Sales, and Judith Germain on building and developing her ‘Inner Network’. Both are well worth waiting for, so keep an eye out for them next month.

What Every Body is Saying

What Every Body is Saying is my favourite book on Body Language; it’s by Ex-FBI Agent Joe Navarro. I like it because I believe, unlike with many body language books, that what Joe says is both true and extremely useful for any coach, consultant or NLP practitioner.

The basis of the book is that it is remarkably difficult to tell whether someone is being truthful or deceitful; however, with practice, it’s easy to notice signs of comfort and discomfort – which can be exceptionally useful if you want to understand them better.

To give you an idea of the content, I’m listing his top ten commandments for decoding non-verbal communication successfully:

1) Be a competent observer of your environment

2) Observing in context is a key to understanding nonverbal behaviour

3) Learn to recognise and detect nonverbal behaviours that are universal

4) Learn to recognise and decode idiosyncratic behaviours

5) When you interact with others, try to establish a baseline

6) Always try to watch for multiple tells – behaviours that occur in clusters or in succession

7) It’s important to look for changes in a person’s behaviour that can signal changes in thoughts, emotions, interest or intent

8) Learning to detect false or misleading non verbal signals is also critical

9) Knowing how to distinguish between comfort and discomfort will help you focus on the most important behaviours for decoding nonverbal communication

10) When observing others, be subtle about it

A good NLP training will help you in much of the above - recommended!

Coaching Network Update

We’re currently having a break from taking on new coaches for our executive coaching network as we’re consolidating for a couple of months and I’m spending some time planning our future direction.

I’d be very interested in talking to anyone who is looking for coaching services or buys coaching services who would be prepared to input to our future strategy. And of course I’d be delighted to talk to anyone who is looking for an executive or business coach now!

Definition of the Month: Trance Phenomena

Trance Phenomena are behaviours usually associated with deep hypnosis, such as amnesia, arm levitation, hallucination, pain control, etc

What I find interesting is our ability to do these behaviours in everyday life, sometimes without realising it.

And Finally...

Remember my quick test of whether someone is going to achieve something (or not): see whether they can easily and comfortably imagine themselves doing the behaviour of the first, smallest step that will get themselves there.

Have a really interesting and successful New Year!

I’m one of those people who believe that success starts with us on the inside and in our ability to deal with whatever happens on the outside.

I wish you all those internal resources that will enable you to have a successful and enjoyable 2010... and in doing so contribute to, and be an inspiration to, others’ successes.

Ignore Everybody

(But maybe not until you have read this newsletter...)

Hugh MacLeod has made a success of drawing cartoons on peoples’ business cards. His book ‘Ignore Everybody – And 39 Other Keys to Creativity’ is enjoyable and easy to read, and dispenses a certain amount of part ‘obvious’ and part ‘tough’ wisdom.

You can get a flavour of the book from a random selection of the contents:

Modelling is one of the core skills in NLP.

Ambition for our Coaching Network

Last month I said I’d set a challenge for the Executive and Business Coaching Network; the challenge was to get to the top of Google for the terms ‘executive coaching’ and ‘business coaching’ within 18 months.

Well, I’ve re-launched the site and we’ve already achieved number five for the term ‘Executive Coaching’ in the UK, so we’re well on track. Remember, this is about a group of coaches working together to provide great ‘coaching content’ rather than any clever ‘SEO’ activity.

I’m still looking for one or two additional coaches to help on the journey. Curious? If so, have a look at our Information for Coaches.

I’m particularly pleased we’ve started writing coaching case studies, as it gives the community an indication of the wide value of coaching.

Definition of the Month: Trance Logic

This is a fascinating phenomenon where if someone has been hypnotised and has carried out a post-hypnotic suggestion (for example, they’ve barked like a dog), they often come up with some ‘logical’ explanation of their behaviour; the ‘explanation’ is untrue and yet amazingly creative.

It’s worth remembering that as human beings we may be exceptionally creative when we justify what we do – but not necessarily accurate!

This month I’m talking to Garner Thomson about what he would recommend to anyone who wanted to become a really good hypnotist. While there are many ‘gems’ throughout the discussion, Garner summarised on three key areas:

Be totally voracious in your learning – gobble up everything you can
Go first – don’t ask your clients to do anything you are unable to do yourself
Experience counts – get as much experience as you can

He also suggests that if you want to start up a business, don’t be too cheap: people generally go for quality.

What would Google Do?

As someone who attracts many of my top clients through the web I’m naturally interested in the apparently very different way of thinking between developing a mainly web based business versus a traditional bricks and mortar business.

I recommend Jeff Jarvis’ ‘What Would Google Do?’ to anyone who wants to develop a ‘mindset’ that is appropriate for this way of working:

For example he suggests that part of the new ethics are:

Make mistakes well
Life is a beta
Be honest
Be transparent
Collaborate
Don’t be evil

What I find interesting is the contrast between this approach and how many people are actually currently being encouraged to work in large companies.

In a similar vein I recommend ‘Free’ by Chris Anderson.

Definition of the Month: Towards

‘Towards’ people show a motivational pattern marked by seeking to accomplish or achieve a particular goal.

It is part of NLP Meta-programme profiling. Remember most people tend to have either a 'towards' or 'away from' preference.

You can tell which someone is by being aware of, and taking notice of, the words they use:

‘Towards’ people use words like: attain, obtain, have, get, achieve
‘Away from’ people use words like avoid, prevent, solve, in case

When presenting to a general audience it’s always best to use both ‘towards’ and ‘away’ words.

Beale’s Podcasts

This month I return to a talk I had with Stephen Gilligan last year. It has proved to be one of our most popular podcasts ever. Stephen is one of the original group of NLP students who then moved onto become a prominent Ericksonian hypnotists.

I’ve always found Stephen’s definition of hypnosis useful. He defines hypnosis in relation to trance, which is something that we all naturally experience from time to time.

Hypnosis is a ritual process to help make the trances we naturally go through much more useful. And while people may first learn about hypnosis through language patterns, it’s really about exploring and connecting with learning states and consciousness.

I found it fascinating. You can read and listen to it from: Hypnosis with Stephen Gilligan. I’m hoping to feature some of Stephen’s work in our NLP DVD, CD and download store shortly.

Next month I’ll continue the hypnosis theme with a new podcast with Garner Thomson. He edited one of my favourite NLP Books TRANCE-formation, for NLP Co-creator Richard Bandler, and is founder of the ‘Society of Medical NLP’.

Tribes – We Need You to Lead Us
Following on from the popularity of Seth Godin’s videos on our forum I’ve now read ‘Tribes’. Looking back at my career I can explain a lot of success (and sometimes lack of it) through my understanding (or not) of the various ‘tribes’ involved in any situation.

And I think that in the more fluid business and social structure we’re moving into, deciding which tribes we lead and which tribes we follow, becomes an important indicator of likely success.

I also think that aspects of tribes are very relevant to leadership. Some tips Seth gives in creating a movement are different to traditional ‘command and control’ leadership, but relevant to many situations today.

Amongst other things, Seth suggests you take these actions:

1) Publish a manifesto
2) Make it easy for your followers to connect with you
3) Make it easy for your followers to connect with each other
4) Realise that money is not necessarily the key point of the movement5) Track progress

NLP Video: Questions and Strategy

Asking questions about the sequence that someone goes through to get the results they’re currently getting is both an effective part of modelling and a way to help them improve what they’re doing.

I was surprised at what I learned!

NLP Definition of the Month: T.O.T.E.

Again related to strategies, and developed by Miller, Galanter and Pibram, the term stands for the sequence Test-Operate-Test-Exit, which describes the basic feed-back loop used to guide all behaviour.

In English it relates to the two important questions:

• How do you know when to start something?
• And how do you know when to finish?

While the questions may seem strange in terms of a ‘problem’ behaviour, the information they can elicit can be extremely useful.

Are you a Coach?

Are you a coach? Or do you want to develop being a coach as part of your portfolio?

If so, you may want to consider joining my updated Executive and Business Coaching Network. It’s a way of developing your profile through a profile, case studies, blogs and shortly video. Your investment is only £50 a year. However, in addition, you must be prepared to commit to writing at least two blogs and one case study every six months. Places are genuinely limited, but let me know if you might be interested.

The Structure of Delight

I meant to read Nelson Zink’s The Structure of Delight many, many years ago and finally read it last week. While a bit ‘new age’ and part ‘hero’s journey’, it genuinely is a treasure trove of subtle, nature-based metaphors adaptable for clientele or personal growth. I felt I’d been on both a holiday and on an adventure after reading it.

The Structure of Delight is NOT an NLP book as such but, like NLP, it is about the power of subjective experience… and, as the editorial review suggests, you can remind yourself that wherever you are, the mind is open to change, learning and delight.

Nelson also makes a very useful suggestion about how to develop our internal dialogue (how we speak to ourselves). As well as maintaining a friendly tone, start off by saying ‘I am…’ and ‘I want…’ and add other ideas with the word ‘and’. For example I’m Michael and I want to earn lots of money and while doing so genuinely help others achieve what’s important to them…

And continually test to find out what voice tone, words and structure of words honestly works for you. It’s what works for you that counts - not what may or not work for other people, or what other people may or may not think.

NLP Definition of the Month: Time Distortion

Time distortion is a subjective temporal experience that is different from ‘objective time’. Often, when we’re enjoying ourselves, time goes quickly; when we’re bored, it appears to go slowly. Like many hypnotic phenomena, the idea is to take something that occurs naturally and use it in a situation where it’s more useful to us.

A natural example of time distortion is where we’ve been driving on the motorway for hours and then leave and come to a 20 mph speed limit... Time literally seems to slow down. As you remember the experience you will be learning to distort (your perception of) time.

Thoughts on Twitter

I’ve recently changed my mind over the use of Twitter. I now realise it’s a very good way of letting people who are interested in you find out what you’re doing, and similarly to find out what people who particularly interest you are doing themselves. And it’s free.

I’m just a bit curious about those that ‘tweet’ every hour or so – don’t they have something better to do?

I’ve also noticed that my contacts on Twitter are often very different to, say, subscribers to this newsletter, or my connections on LinkedIn. My objective is to give anyone that wants to stay in touch a variety of ways of doing it.

Richard Wiseman’s new book is a must read for anyone interested in coaching and change. Allegedly based on research, it gives fascinating tips on topics ranging from happiness, motivation and attraction. For example:

Develop the gratitude attitude
Have people list three things a day they are grateful for. It can increase their happiness, optimism and health.

Buy a pot plant for the office
It can increase creativity by 15%!

Visualise yourself doing, not achieving
Visualising yourself having achieved your goal can lessen your chance of succeeding, whereas visualising doing what you can do to achieve your goal can increase your chances.

Touch people lightly on the upper arm
Touching on the upper arm can demonstrate high status. When tested on the street, this strategy increased the success of getting telephone numbers from total strangers by 10%.

A ‘timeline’ is a subjective construct which metaphorically organises your clients’ past, present and future in space.

One of the most interesting aspects of timeline is where you start.

As a generalisation for small incremental change, start with the present and then explore the future

However, if you’re looking for big or transformational change, start with future and work backwards to make the best plan.

Sir Ken Robison’s ‘The Element’
Sir Ken’s book suggests that, to be in our ‘element’, we need to connect to our passion, our medium (for example, sport, art, and writing) and our tribe (that is, people who will inspire and challenge us to do better). You can listen and watch him on the link: Sir Ken Robinson: Hammer Lectures.

From an NLP point of view, his book ‘The Element’ is good because it’s packed full of stories of people like Paul McCartney and George Harrison, who were told at school that they didn’t have any musical ability, and only discovered their element later.

It’s a really good resource of stories to read and pass on.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Synaesthesia
Synaesthesia is the process of overlap between representational systems. Any two sensory modalities may be linked together, so examples include:

See-feel circuits – this is where a person derives feelings from what they see
Hear-feel circuits – here, a person gets feelings from what they hear
See-hear circuits – so a person sees colours when they hear music

NLP Video – Outcomes and Direction

How do you think about what you want so that you’re more likely to achieve it? Watch and listen to a discussion between Liam and me on the topic: Outcomes and Direction Video.

It’s my view that most important part of outcomes in NLP or coaching is to set a direction that is big, bold and motivating. That is: big vision, but small steps!

Remember there are times to be focused on outcomes and direction…and there are also times to relax – so soften and just enjoy your journey!

NLP Definitions of the Month: Submodalities

Submodalities are the special sensory qualities perceived by each of the senses. For example:

Visual submodalities include colour, shape, movement, brightness, depth, etc
Auditory submodalities include volume, pitch, tempo, etc
Kinaesthetic submodalities include pressure, temperature, texture, location, etc

We experience the outside (and inside) world through at least five senses. Submodalities can be described as the structure of each sense.

While we can't change the actual experience of something that has happened in the past, we may be able to change how the experience is structured and therefore how the memory is experienced or remembered. The impact of this is profound.

If you have a memory that is remembered as a picture you are very likely to be able to change the experience of that memory by changing the brightness, distance or focus of that picture.

And I’m not getting into the discussion of how many senses we really have…

On the 21st I came back from 5 days with Richard Bandler and John La Valle after their TRANCE-formation seminar in Amsterdam.

It was organised by META.

It was one of the best NLP seminars I’ve been on – Richard and John La Valle totally on form, a great group of people, great city and great fun practising in some of the bars and coffee shops afterwards!

What are states and beliefs in relation to NLP? Watch and listen to a short video where I discuss states and beliefs in NLP.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Strategy

A strategy is a set of explicit mental and behavioural steps used to achieve a specific outcome.

It can be useful to know a client’s strategy in, say, buying a car from the initial trigger to the final purchase, and identifying which representational systems are involved in which order.

Presenting back to the client, using the same order of representational systems, can be very persuasive.

Another application can be finding the strategy a client has in having a problem. This can be done by getting your client to teach you to have the 'problem'. When you understand the strategy it’s much easier to break the problem.

This is one of the most powerful approaches in NLP.See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions.

How to Acquire Clients

Last month I mentioned David Maister and Strategy and the Fat Smoker, and commented that David has gained the reputation as being one of the experts in the ‘big’ consulting companies.

As a contrast I’m recommending How to Acquire Clients by Alan Weiss. Alan is an example of someone who regularly makes a 6+ figure income from being a sole consultant. The book is aimed at the established sole consultant who wants to raise his or her revenue significantly.

One of his thoughts that appeals to me is that to develop business you need three ingredients: passion, competence and a genuine customer need. If one is missing you’re unlikely to be as successful as you want.

When he started, one of his tactics was to write articles knocking all the key management fads at the time. The articles gained him hate mail, notoriety and clients!

What are the key skills in NLP? Watch and listen to a short video where I discuss NLP Key Skills.

Curiously to me, one of the key skills is ‘shutting up’ and listening in such a way that we can experience what a client is saying, without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing.

This means you are taking in the maximum amount of information to know where to go next.

NLP Video: Gilligan on Generative Coaching

There are times in our lives where we need to move forward to do things in which we have no conscious knowledge or experience, an area where traditional coaching models like ‘Grow’ become almost meaningless and where aspects of NLP and Ericksonian coaching are exceptionally powerful.

It’s a fascinating area, so thanks to Alastair Prentice for the interview of him talking to Stephen Gilligan about Generative Coaching.

NLP Definition of the Month: State

The total ongoing mental and physical condition from which a person is acting.

State is one of the most important concepts in NLP. Your physical and mental condition lead everything you do. One of the most important benefits of NLP is that it enables you to explore how you can change your own state, and to consider what would be the most useful state for any particular context.

Sometimes the most useful preparation you can do before you go into a meeting is decide what would be the best state to achieve the outcome you want: Curious? Angry? Powerful? Fierce? Supportive? Focused? Playful? Mischievous? It can make a significant difference.

I’ve been reading ‘The Body Fat Solution’ by Tom Venuto and highly recommend it to anyone interested in building lean muscle, losing weight and becoming healthier.

It’s a complete system, suggesting reasons why most diets don’t appear to work, and giving approaches to weight loss and effective exercise. It also looks at the importance of beliefs and visualisations and maintaining a support network.

Strategy and the Fat Smoker: Doing What’s Obvious but not Easy

David Maister is probably the leading authority on consultancy companies. Curiously he follows many of the arguments in ‘The Ultimate Weight Solution’ when he says that setting a plan or business strategy is easy. It’s in the implementation that people fall down.

Strategy and the Fat Smoker is a must read for anyone involved in organisational change.

He also develops the metaphor that transactional selling is like a ‘one night stand’, whereas relationship selling is like a ‘romance’. In the first you mainly look after yourself, in the second you genuinely consider your client. And they are normally very different. It’s interesting which relationship both you and your clients really want.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Secondary Gain

Secondary gain is where seemingly negative or problematic behaviour carries out a positive function at some level.

For example, smoking may help a person to relax or help them fit a particular self image.

To be effective, any change may need to address the secondary gain; for example, if smoking provides relaxation, then the change needs to provide an alternative way of relaxing.

Secondary gain is also particularly important in organisational change. It is almost impossible to change an organisation’s culture unless you change the reward structure to fit.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Rapport

Rapport: The presence of trust, harmony and cooperation in a relationship.In NLP rapport is normally achieved by adjusting some aspect of your behaviour to be similar to some aspects of another's behaviour.

Aspects may include your body posture, body movement, voice quality or breathing rate.When you've achieved rapport with an individual, albeit briefly, you can more easily understand them and, if useful, lead them.

A good way of understanding rapport better is: when you meet someone the first time and get on really well with them, spend just a few seconds noticing what's going on.

This month I’ve been talking to Judith Germain about how she mentors CEOs and also about how she networks. She tells us the key to mentoring is to be able to establish a relationship of trust, creating a safe space where you have permission to challenge strongly. On networking, Judith suggests networkers need to establish a unique identity as the expert in their field.

I’ve also been talking to David Regler, one of our master practitioners, about how to set up a telemarketing campaign to develop your business. Telemarketing can be an extremely successful way of developing new business – but it’s not cheap and requires careful planning.

What actually is NLP?

It’s interesting to watch and listen to both NLP creators Richard Bandler and John Grinder answering the question: What is NLP? Watch the videos, and do let me know what you think.

My own description is that NLP is an exploration of communication, thinking and change. This leads to increased communication skills, confidence, motivation and success, and is directly related to increasing our ability to influence, persuade and coach.

It is also effective in overcoming blocks or barriers caused by a lack of these skills.
Practising NLP techniques can lead not only to personal and business success but also increased personal choice and freedom.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Parts

Parts: A metaphorical way of talking about independent programmes and strategies of behaviour.

Transactional analysis talks about your 'parent, adult and child' parts. They're not real but can be useful as a way of thinking about or explaining things.

Parts can be used in persuasion; for example, 'There is a part of you that just really wants to benefit from this course; can't you feel how strongly it wants to attend and help you learn? Just focus on it for a while as you notice it’s getting stronger...’

While the concept of parts has many uses, as a generalisation it’s best to make sure we integrate any ‘part’ into a functioning whole at the end of any intervention.

At the very least 2009 is going to be an exciting and eventful year!

I caught the wrong end of a downturn about 15 years ago when I found myself in the wrong job with a huge mortgage and a young family to support.

Beale’s NLP Podcast: Addiction

This month I talk to Canadian NLP Trainer Anita Kozlowski about helping people with addictions.

Her metaphor for how she works with clients is, “As a tour guide walking along with them and guiding them across a trail to a place where they want to get… they may not have the courage and they may not have the means… yet for most of them we travel together quickly and successfully…”

Seduction Videos

While you may or may not approve of the way the subject is presented in these videos, there are a lot of useful parallels between seduction and selling and networking and leadership.

In addition, I find some of them hugely entertaining. I’ve included some of the best YouTube videos on our forum.

The videos include: David DeAngelo (approaching women), Mystery (fear of the approach), Neil Strauss (The Five Question Game), and Ross Jeffries (Fundamentals). You can see and listen to them from NLP Seduction Videos.

NLP Definition of the Month: Outcomes

Outcomes are to motivate and set a direction, and to make the journey more enjoyable. The bigger and more exciting the outcomes, the better! The basic rules are that your outcomes must be:

Positive (that is, they are something you want rather than you want to avoid)
Under your control (acquiring the skills to get a new job is under your control - getting a specific job may not be)
Achievable in at least three senses (e.g., you can see, hear and feel what it would be like to achieve your outcome - and maybe smell and taste it too!)
Ecological (getting them will do you and those closest to you good)

And remember, if and when they’re not working, change them. And sometimes you may just want to enjoy the journey.

NLP Definitions of the month: Olfactory & Gustatory

Olfactory means ‘pertaining to smell’ and gustatory means ‘pertaining to taste’. While we tend to concentrate on the visual, auditory and kinaesthetic aspects of any experience, it’s worth bringing in both the olfactory and gustatory senses which, when they are present, can be very powerful. Adding one or two olfactory and or gustatory words can even add an enticing dimension to a business presentation.

After NLP Master Trainer John La Valle’s excellent discussion on motivation last month, we have another really great discussion on motivation with Business Coach Nicole Backmann,

Nicole makes the comment that we all need to be able to answer ‘what gives us energy?’ and ‘what drains energy from us?’ as part of our responsibility to keep ourselves motivated.

Then I asked the question, “Can you attract money ‘subconsciously?’” of psychologist Dr Peta Stapleton. She said yes, and her primary recommendation for anyone who wants to attract money subconsciously is to clearly decide that they want to. Is this as easy as it sounds? Make your own mind up. On the subject of money, I also spoke to Vicky Karambatsos-Kitson whose company ‘Knowledge To Action’ runs free seminars and paid training and coaching on spread betting trading. It’s a way you can get into stock market trading on a minimal budget.

Richard’s TRANCE-formation

I’ve been lucky enough to get hold of and read NLP co-creator Richard Bandler’s latest guide to TRANCE-formation.

I now recommend it as my suggested book of choice to anyone who is genuinely interested in NLP and hypnosis:

it’s suitable for anyone from the beginner to the most experienced. The difference I find between Richard and other authors is that I believe he can genuinely and easily do what he talks about. It’s practical and it’s deeply human.

Even better, he brings NLP up to date from the incredibly useful Milton and Meta models to the latest approaches in 2008. I’ve already incorporated some of the new content in our trainings.

I’ve sometimes been cautious about the same people from a company doing an NLP training together; however, I’m currently running a series of practitioner courses for a group of professionals within Oracle and I’m impressed that they’re handling it in exactly the right way to the maximise the benefit from their investment for their Company.

I mentioned Richard Bandler’s new book, Get the Life You Want: The Secrets to Quick and Lasting Life Change with Neuro-Linguistic Programming last month.

Having now read it a couple of times, I highly recommend it.

It has many useful strategies for most of the common issues and opportunities in life in 2000 and onwards. It’s easy to read, has some excellent techniques based on sub modalities and spinning feelings, and is cheap to buy!

In fact, it’s one of my top NLP Book recommendations.

NLP Definition of the Month – Modelling

“The act of creating a calculus which describes a given system”Modelling, i.e. being able to reproduce and improve upon results that others achieve, is one of the key components of NLP and can have profound impact for our personal and business lives. Eliciting strategies enables us to find out the sequences people go through to do things. Robert Dilt’s ‘Logical Levels’ enable us to get some useful tips (and uncover further areas worthy of exploration) on how people achieve results, and traditional NLP modelling (a bit like the natural learning we did as children) enables us to take on whole new competencies.

Beale’s NLP Podcast: Benefits and Leadership

I’m delighted that Richard Sanders, Group Strategy Director at the John Lewis Partnership, agreed to take part in this month’s podcast discussing both the benefits he’s received from NLP and his approach to leadership.

He’s found that NLP has given him a framework to help guide him with through some of the baggage of history, politics and personal preconceptions associated with any large business change. He also approaches his leadership in an ‘influencer’ rather than a ‘line’ role.

New Richard Bandler Books

Richard is launching two new books Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-Formation: Hypnosis for Everybody and Get the Life You Want: The Secrets to Quick and Lasting Life Change with Neuro-Linguistic Programming

They are now available for pre-order. I suspect the first copies will sell out quickly, so if you’re interested it’s worth placing your order now.

I’ll also bring to your attention my favourite of Richard’s DVD’s, ‘Class of a Master’, which is a four DVD set showing Richard presenting to a studio audience.

Also take a look at the ‘Marshall Tapes’, which are copies of video tapes of Richard doing 1:1 work. If you like Richard’s work you’ll really enjoy them.

Which includes stories, parables and analogiesIt's worth remembering that stories, etc, are and always have been one of the strongest mediums for getting a message across. It's worth being aware that when we run 'presentation skills' seminars and ask delegates, 'How do you know when someone really knows their subject?', the most common answer is, ‘They illustrate what they say with stories.’

Following a year studying martial arts in China, my son Liam has just finished a Martial Arts degree in the UK and is currently in finishing off the thesis for this in Japan. He transcribes all our podcasts.

Before he left for Japan he completed a short podcast on some of his Martial Arts adventures in China.

Beale’s NLP Podcast: Cold Calling

I find call calling interesting because it’s difficult, it requires courage and it’s the potentially the start of a relationship or transaction – and unless you start it doesn’t matter how good you are you’re unlikely to finish. There are learning’s that not only apply to cold calling but also to business networking many areas of life.

This month I talk to international trainer Andy Preston about some of the differences between what works and the mistakes people make.

As I mentioned last month I’ve been an NLP trainer for 10 years and it’s fascinating to reflect back on the benefits that people have achieved from exploring NLP.

While NLP enables people to become better and what their already good at it also gives the mental and emotional resources to take on really large and new challenges from taking a senior promotion, organising a takeover to starting a new company or doing something totally new with their lives.

NLP Definition of the month – Meta Programme

A process by which one sorts through multiple generalisations simultaneously. As such, Meta programs control how and when a person will engage any set of strategies in a given context.An example of the use of a Meta Program (there are many) is to be aware some people are motivated towards things (money, happiness etc - carrots) while some are motivated away from things (poverty, loosing their jobs etc - sticks).

To motivate someone it helps if you know whether they are motivated towards or away from things. Hence the metaphorical question 'is he motivated by a carrot or a stick?'
