Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - July 2009

Hi, here’s your July 2009 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents: what’s in your newsletter this month

  • Beale’s Podcasts
  • September Foundation
  • Launch of Flagship Service
  • Funding for NLP Training and Coaching
  • NLP Video – Outcomes and Direction
  • NLP Definitions of the Month: Submodalities
  • Tribes
  • And Finally…

Beale’s Podcasts

This month I discuss two very different topics:

Sales with Oracle director Willem Van Enter and experienced ICT Sales Trainer Paul Jarvis
Palliative Cancer Care with Tony Alexander.

I’ve always been fascinated by the range of different fields that NLP skills and attitudes can be used in.

Willem stresses the importance of honesty, passion and self confidence while selling, while Paul emphasises the continuing and growing need for personal skills in successful selling.

You can listen to and / or read about the discussions from these links: Willem Van Enter on Successful Selling and Paul Jarvis on Successful Selling.

Tony is a therapist and trainer who practices hypnotherapy in the Lakelands Day Care Hospice in Corby in the United Kingdom. He gives some real insights into the opportunities and challenges for cancer care. You can listen to or read the interview from: Tony Alexander on Hypnosis and Cancer Care.

September Foundation

We’re now taking bookings for our NLP Foundation which takes place on 7 th and 8th September 2009. Book early to ensure a place!

We’re also maintaining, for a limited time only, our special price of £1200 + VAT for anyone who books for a complete practitioner on their credit card. This means you will save over £500 on individual module prices. For details, click on this link: seminar dates and offers.

Launch of Flagship NLP training service

Over the past five years I’ve been developing a unique 1:1 NLP training with delegates from the UK, Europe and the Middle East. This has been especially useful for clients who either cannot make the dates for our open seminars or who require total confidentiality. The results have been exceptional. You can read more from NLP Training: 1:1 Face to Face Training.

Funding for NLP Training and Coaching

If you’re an owner of a business in the UK with 5-250 staff, you may be able to receive up to £1,000 for business leadership skills development – which includes NLP training or coaching – through your local business link.

If you’re interested in pursuing this, please give me a call, or contact your local Business Link. Be aware each local Business Link will have slightly different qualification rules.

NLP Video – Outcomes and Direction

How do you think about what you want so that you’re more likely to achieve it? Watch and listen to a discussion between Liam and me on the topic: Outcomes and Direction Video.

It’s my view that most important part of outcomes in NLP or coaching is to set a direction that is big, bold and motivating. That is: big vision, but small steps!

Remember there are times to be focused on outcomes and direction…and there are also times to relax – so soften and just enjoy your journey!

NLP Definitions of the Month: Submodalities

Submodalities are the special sensory qualities perceived by each of the senses. For example:

Visual submodalities include colour, shape, movement, brightness, depth, etc
Auditory submodalities include volume, pitch, tempo, etc
Kinaesthetic submodalities include pressure, temperature, texture, location, etc

We experience the outside (and inside) world through at least five senses. Submodalities can be described as the structure of each sense.

While we can't change the actual experience of something that has happened in the past, we may be able to change how the experience is structured and therefore how the memory is experienced or remembered. The impact of this is profound.

If you have a memory that is remembered as a picture you are very likely to be able to change the experience of that memory by changing the brightness, distance or focus of that picture.

And I’m not getting into the discussion of how many senses we really have…

See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions

Tribes: Seth Godin on the Tribes we Lead

I came across this video on The Tribes we Lead, by Seth Godin. It’s an interesting and useful metaphor for anyone in leadership or part of a team…

And Finally

Thank you for reading this newsletter. Have a spectacular month!

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - June 2009

Hi, Here’s your June 2009 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents: what’s in your newsletter this month:

• Free NLP Taster (worth £125)
• Beale’s Podcast
• More on Acquiring Clients
• Business Training
• Richard Bandler – Review and Free Video
• NLP Videos – State and beliefs
• NLP Definitions of the Month: Strategy
• And Finally…

Free NLP Taster (Worth £125)

Our final free taster this year is on the 25th June in Milton Keynes.

These evenings are normally great fun and, while we're obviously interested in promoting our seminars, we're always very happy for anyone to attend who simply has a genuine interest in NLP, whether experienced or totally new to the field.

If you haven’t yet done so, please register here: NLP Registration.

If you can’t make these dates but would like an hour’s chat to answer any questions you have about NLP, drop me a phone message on 01908 506 563 and I’ll arrange a convenient time to talk.

Beale’s Podcast

This month I talk to Nadia Harper who runs Nisada Coaching, an NLP Training and coaching business in Las Vagas. I really like her straightforward approach to NLP, coaching and life.

She comments that many people are so busy with investing in their business or sales and marketing that they forget to invest in themselves – and it’s investing and connecting with themselves that will create the fire and passion to really drive their business.

You can listen and read about the discussion from this link: Nadia Harper on personal development

How to Acquire Consulting Clients

Last month I mentioned Alan Weiss’ book on How to Acquire Clients. I’d also add Alan’s book Million Dollar Consulting. I’m absorbing both as part of developing my own business.

Alan has a phrase ‘I didn’t realise how stupid I was just two weeks ago.’ I can relate to it well – I think it’s a demonstration of learning. Have a look!

Business Training

Do you want your team to excel? Sales, influence, leadership, presentations, motivation and more – an ‘In House’ NLP based training can give you the edge. Complete our business training priority contact form if you would like to know more.

In fact, I’ve just finished a series of 60 days’ training for Oracle … I’m delighted to have received a very positive testimonial from Willem Van Enter, Senior Director of Sales and Consulting Readiness, Oracle EMEA.

I’ve been impressed with all the Oracle people I’ve met so far.

Click on the link and have a look at what Oracle and more of our clients say.

Richard Bandler – Hypnosis in Amsterdam, Review and Free Video

On the 21st I came back from 5 days with Richard Bandler and John La Valle after their TRANCE-formation seminar in Amsterdam.

It was organised by META.

It was one of the best NLP seminars I’ve been on – Richard and John La Valle totally on form, a great group of people, great city and great fun practising in some of the bars and coffee shops afterwards!

Watch out to see if they run it again next year, and see if you can get on it.

You can now watch and listen to over two hours of Richard on 30 years of NLP (parts 3a & 3b) on Google Video.

It’s great sound quality too. Scroll to the bottom of our Richard Bandler Videos page to see them. And click this link to see four more interviews we’ve added with Richard and Ronald Amsler: Ronald is interviewing Richard – they’re highly recommended listening.

NLP Video – States and Beliefs

What are states and beliefs in relation to NLP? Watch and listen to a short video where I discuss states and beliefs in NLP.

You can watch and listen to the full NLP video mini-course here.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Strategy

A strategy is a set of explicit mental and behavioural steps used to achieve a specific outcome.

It can be useful to know a client’s strategy in, say, buying a car from the initial trigger to the final purchase, and identifying which representational systems are involved in which order.

Presenting back to the client, using the same order of representational systems, can be very persuasive.

Another application can be finding the strategy a client has in having a problem. This can be done by getting your client to teach you to have the 'problem'. When you understand the strategy it’s much easier to break the problem.

This is one of the most powerful approaches in NLP.See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions.

And Finally…

I’ve just had my profile published in the Public Service Review: Local Government and the Regions 14 under the heading of ‘Leadership, Motivation and Change – Empowering you and your staff through NLP’.

It’s worth a read if you’re interested in the use of NLP in Local Government.

Thank you for reading this newsletter. I wish you that whatever you’re going through this month, that you learn that which that will be exceptionally useful to you to achieve whatever you want for the future.

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - May 2009

Here’s your May 2009 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

How to Acquire Clients

Last month I mentioned David Maister and Strategy and the Fat Smoker, and commented that David has gained the reputation as being one of the experts in the ‘big’ consulting companies.

As a contrast I’m recommending How to Acquire Clients by Alan Weiss. Alan is an example of someone who regularly makes a 6+ figure income from being a sole consultant. The book is aimed at the established sole consultant who wants to raise his or her revenue significantly.

One of his thoughts that appeals to me is that to develop business you need three ingredients: passion, competence and a genuine customer need. If one is missing you’re unlikely to be as successful as you want.

When he started, one of his tactics was to write articles knocking all the key management fads at the time. The articles gained him hate mail, notoriety and clients!

Business Training

Do you want your team to excel? Sales, influence, leadership, presentations, motivation and more – an ‘In House’ NLP based training can give you the edge. Complete our business training priority contact form if you would like to know more.

Funding for NLP Training and Coaching

NLP Video: Key Skills

What are the key skills in NLP? Watch and listen to a short video where I discuss NLP Key Skills.

Curiously to me, one of the key skills is ‘shutting up’ and listening in such a way that we can experience what a client is saying, without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing.

This means you are taking in the maximum amount of information to know where to go next.

You can watch and listen to the full NLP video mini-course here.

NLP Video: Gilligan on Generative Coaching

There are times in our lives where we need to move forward to do things in which we have no conscious knowledge or experience, an area where traditional coaching models like ‘Grow’ become almost meaningless and where aspects of NLP and Ericksonian coaching are exceptionally powerful.

It’s a fascinating area, so thanks to Alastair Prentice for the interview of him talking to Stephen Gilligan about Generative Coaching.

NLP Definition of the Month: State

The total ongoing mental and physical condition from which a person is acting.

State is one of the most important concepts in NLP. Your physical and mental condition lead everything you do. One of the most important benefits of NLP is that it enables you to explore how you can change your own state, and to consider what would be the most useful state for any particular context.

Sometimes the most useful preparation you can do before you go into a meeting is decide what would be the best state to achieve the outcome you want: Curious? Angry? Powerful? Fierce? Supportive? Focused? Playful? Mischievous? It can make a significant difference.

See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions.

And Finally…

Thank you for reading this newsletter. Continuing on from last month, I wish you that whatever you’re going through this month, that you learn that which that will be exceptionally useful to you to achieve whatever you want for the future.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Secondary Gain
And finally…

Free NLP Taster (Worth £125)

Our free tasters this year are on the 31st March in London and on the 25th June in Milton Keynes.

These evenings are normally great fun and while we're obviously interested in promoting our seminars, we're always very happy for anyone to attend who simply has a genuine interest in NLP, whether experienced or totally new to the field. If you haven’t yet done so, please register here: NLP Registration.

If you can’t make these dates but would like an hour’s chat to answer any questions you have about NLP, drop me a phone message on 01908 506 563 and I’ll arrange a convenient time to talk.

Why now is a good time for NLP training

The main reason for doing good NLP training is that it will help your business and personal life. You’re likely to get much more focused attention and coaching support when you take training in 2009.

While my corporate calendar is almost full, we’re getting fewer people attend our open courses. This means that anyone who does attend gets a much more personal training, and much more time spent on their own particular agenda and opportunities.

Personally I get more satisfaction from the trainings, because I know delegates are getting so much from them.

Take advantage! Follow the link to explore dates and register your interest: NLP Booking.

Richard Bandler in Amsterdam – join us

TRANCE-formation - Hypnosis as an Application of NLP

Join the father and co-creator of NLP, Dr Richard Bandler, as he guides you on this journey of discovery. It’s from Saturday 16th May to Wednesday 20th May 2009 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Find out more about Richard Bandler in Amsterdam and register interest here.

Please note that you get a 300 Euro discount if you pay by the 31st March.

To ensure you get the discounted price you can pay by credit card here. NLP Credit Card Payments.

The Ultimate Weight Solution

I’ve been reading ‘The Body Fat Solution’ by Tom Venuto and highly recommend it to anyone interested in building lean muscle, losing weight and becoming healthier.

It’s a complete system, suggesting reasons why most diets don’t appear to work, and giving approaches to weight loss and effective exercise. It also looks at the importance of beliefs and visualisations and maintaining a support network.

I’d also recommend it to anyone who coaches others to lose weight and become healthier, and anyone interested in how to support real lifestyle changes.
See: ‘The Body Fat Solution’ by Tom Venuto

Strategy and the Fat Smoker: Doing What’s Obvious but not Easy

David Maister is probably the leading authority on consultancy companies. Curiously he follows many of the arguments in ‘The Ultimate Weight Solution’ when he says that setting a plan or business strategy is easy. It’s in the implementation that people fall down.

Strategy and the Fat Smoker is a must read for anyone involved in organisational change.

He also develops the metaphor that transactional selling is like a ‘one night stand’, whereas relationship selling is like a ‘romance’. In the first you mainly look after yourself, in the second you genuinely consider your client. And they are normally very different. It’s interesting which relationship both you and your clients really want.

NLP Videos – Coaching

What are the key elements in coaching? Watch and listen to two short videos where I discuss some of the key aspects of the elements of coaching: NLP coaching Part A and NLP coaching Part B.

You can watch and listen to the full NLP video mini-course here.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Secondary Gain

Secondary gain is where seemingly negative or problematic behaviour carries out a positive function at some level.

For example, smoking may help a person to relax or help them fit a particular self image.

To be effective, any change may need to address the secondary gain; for example, if smoking provides relaxation, then the change needs to provide an alternative way of relaxing.

Secondary gain is also particularly important in organisational change. It is almost impossible to change an organisation’s culture unless you change the reward structure to fit.
See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions.

And finally…

We’ve had a small technical issue with our latest podcast, but are pleased to confirm the series will continue next month.

Thank you for reading this newsletter. Continuing on from last month I wish you as much courage, caring and not caring, delight, tenacity, humour, playfulness, tenderness, fierceness, creativity and joy as you might find useful over the next period.

Beale’s NLP Podcast: Leadership

This month I’m revisiting my talk with David Sales on leadership. David believes leadership is all about bravery, excitement and determination – which I think is particularly relevant to where we are at the moment.

And his top tips? The first is, ‘Listen, listen, listen, and collect as much information as you can.’ The second is, ‘Go with your instinct, and don't let data overwhelm your intuition.’ His third tip is, ‘Be brave in driving it through.’ Sound advice.

Listen on iTunes

Remember you can catch up with previous podcasts on iTunes or from our podcast feed.

Free NLP Taster (Worth £125)

I’ve had to change the date of our taster evening in Regents College, London from the 3rd to the 31st March – I apologise for this as I hate changing dates.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Rapport

Rapport: The presence of trust, harmony and cooperation in a relationship. In NLP rapport is normally achieved by adjusting some aspect of your behaviour to be similar to some aspects of another's behaviour.

Aspects may include your body posture, body movement, voice quality or breathing rate. When you've achieved rapport with an individual, albeit briefly, you can more easily understand them and, if useful, lead them.

A good way of understanding rapport better is: when you meet someone the first time and get on really well with them, spend just a few seconds noticing what's going on.

See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions.

And finally…

We’ve just launched a FREE online video 12 chapter NLP mini-course. You can enjoy an early preview here: NLP Video course.

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - February 2009

Here’s your February 2009 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents: what’s in your newsletter this month

  • Beale’s NLP Podcast: Mentoring CEOs, Networking and Sales
  • Listen on iTunes
  • What is NLP?
  • Best NLP Books
  • More Comedy
  • Our Special Offers
  • NLP Definitions of the Month: Parts
  • And Finally…

Beale’s NLP Podcast: Mentoring CEOs, Networking and Sales

This month I’ve been talking to Judith Germain about how she mentors CEOs and also about how she networks. She tells us the key to mentoring is to be able to establish a relationship of trust, creating a safe space where you have permission to challenge strongly. On networking, Judith suggests networkers need to establish a unique identity as the expert in their field.

I’ve also been talking to David Regler, one of our master practitioners, about how to set up a telemarketing campaign to develop your business. Telemarketing can be an extremely successful way of developing new business – but it’s not cheap and requires careful planning.

You also need to have the right sales skills to follow up any appointments made. Listen to my interview with David, or read the transcript, for some valuable advice.

Listen on iTunes

Remember you can catch up with previous podcasts on iTunes or from our podcast feed.

What actually is NLP?

It’s interesting to watch and listen to both NLP creators Richard Bandler and John Grinder answering the question: What is NLP? Watch the videos, and do let me know what you think.

My own description is that NLP is an exploration of communication, thinking and change. This leads to increased communication skills, confidence, motivation and success, and is directly related to increasing our ability to influence, persuade and coach.

It is also effective in overcoming blocks or barriers caused by a lack of these skills.
Practising NLP techniques can lead not only to personal and business success but also increased personal choice and freedom.

Best NLP Books

I strongly recommend Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-Formation and Get the Life You Want: The Secrets to Quick and Lasting Life Change with Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
You can see all our current recommendations by clicking this link: Recommended NLP books.

Please feel free to add any other recommendations.

And if you want an independent view of the best NLP books, have a look at Andy Bradbury’s recommendations. I don’t always agree with him, but I always enjoy reading his recommendations.

More Comedy

We’ve added two more George Carlin video clips to our comedy collection – although be aware they may offend some! I’ve ordered his complete collection on DVD, so I’ll let you know what it’s like. Click on the link and scroll down to see him.

Remember, a genuine smile is a key element of NLP…

Our Special Offers

It’s a new year, and the time when good intentions are high – so, if now is the right time for you to attend a training or take advantage of 1:1 coaching, please see our NLP training and NLP Coaching offers.

NLP Definitions of the Month: Parts

Parts: A metaphorical way of talking about independent programmes and strategies of behaviour.

Transactional analysis talks about your 'parent, adult and child' parts. They're not real but can be useful as a way of thinking about or explaining things.

Parts can be used in persuasion; for example, 'There is a part of you that just really wants to benefit from this course; can't you feel how strongly it wants to attend and help you learn? Just focus on it for a while as you notice it’s getting stronger...’

While the concept of parts has many uses, as a generalisation it’s best to make sure we integrate any ‘part’ into a functioning whole at the end of any intervention.

See our A-Z of NLP terms for more definitions.

And finally…

I’d like to thank you for reading this newsletter and, while you may or may not see them yet, the more we get into the New Year the more opportunities you will see and find. And the more you see and find the better the year will become…

Beale's Business NLP, Coaching, Sales and Attraction Newsletter - January 2009

Here’s your January 2009 newsletter from UK NLP trainer Michael Beale of PPI… bringing you valuable hints, tips and information on business NLP, coaching, sales, networking and attraction.

Contents - what’s in your newsletter this month?

  • A warm welcome to 2009!
  • Special Practitioner Offer
  • Personal Coaching Offer
  • NEW Business Master Practitioner
  • Beale’s NLP Podcast: Addiction
  • Seduction Videos
  • NLP Term of the Month: Outcomes
  • And Finally…

A Warm Welcome to 2009!

At the very least 2009 is going to be an exciting and eventful year!

I caught the wrong end of a downturn about 15 years ago when I found myself in the wrong job with a huge mortgage and a young family to support.

So I have great sympathy for anyone who is caught in the current maelstrom. However, 15 years on, and having learned a lot in the meantime, I’m really looking forward to the period we’re moving into.

I suspect, in the current situation, anyone who has genuinely good change and NLP skills is going to have more opportunities presented to them that they can possibly handle.

Whatever situation you find yourself in, I wish you an eventful and successful 2009.

We’ve prepared a particularly strong offer for 2009 and I’m going to spend a bit more time than usual in this newsletter discussing it.

Special Practitioner Offer

We’re offering a limited time £500 discount for anyone who invests in our 8-day modular NLP practitioner accreditation and pays in advance on their credit card. You can then choose to take the modules at times that suit your diary and priorities.

Your investment is £1200+VAT (the normal cost of buying these modules separately is £1767+VAT, so you’ll save over £500 when you take advantage of this time limited offer) .

Personal Coaching Offer

If you’re considering taking on a business or personal coach, I suggest you ‘try out’ as many coaches as you’re able to, so you can choose who is best for you in the context that’s important to you.

This works from the coaches’ point of view too – it’s an efficient way to help them decide who the best people to work with are.

We offer a free 30-minute telephone coaching session – visit our business performance and personal coaching details to learn more. Please note this is a totally free session and we do not talk about our services; however, we’re happy to do so separately.

NEW Business Master Practitioner

We have introduced a NLP Business Practitioner component into our NLP training portfolio. This is for existing practitioners who need to successfully complete four masterclass modules from either Sales, Coaching, Change Management, Presenting, Hypnotic Influence, and Leadership.

Our existing Master Practitioners need only to complete one additional module.

See details from our full range of accredited NLP courses.

Beale’s NLP Podcast: Addiction

This month I talk to Canadian NLP Trainer Anita Kozlowski about helping people with addictions.

Her metaphor for how she works with clients is, “As a tour guide walking along with them and guiding them across a trail to a place where they want to get… they may not have the courage and they may not have the means… yet for most of them we travel together quickly and successfully…”

You can listen to or read the discussion on the transcript from: Anita Kozlowski on smoking and addiction.

Seduction Videos

While you may or may not approve of the way the subject is presented in these videos, there are a lot of useful parallels between seduction and selling and networking and leadership.

In addition, I find some of them hugely entertaining. I’ve included some of the best YouTube videos on our forum.

The videos include: David DeAngelo (approaching women), Mystery (fear of the approach), Neil Strauss (The Five Question Game), and Ross Jeffries (Fundamentals). You can see and listen to them from NLP Seduction Videos.

NLP Definition of the Month: Outcomes

Outcomes are to motivate and set a direction, and to make the journey more enjoyable. The bigger and more exciting the outcomes, the better! The basic rules are that your outcomes must be:

  • Positive (that is, they are something you want rather than you want to avoid)
  • Under your control (acquiring the skills to get a new job is under your control - getting a specific job may not be)
  • Achievable in at least three senses (e.g., you can see, hear and feel what it would be like to achieve your outcome - and maybe smell and taste it too!)
  • Ecological (getting them will do you and those closest to you good)

And remember, if and when they’re not working, change them. And sometimes you may just want to enjoy the journey.

See our A-Z of NLP terms.

And finally…

…I’d like to end where I started, and again wish you huge success for the New Year.

Enjoy, take care, and remember that one of our most enjoyable challenges is to find out what we’re really good at.
